The Gainesville Chapter of the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA Gainesville Chapter), in collaboration with the Alachua County Public Schools, is delighted to invite middle school students of Alachua County Public Schools to participate in an essay contest on the theme “The Role of the United Nations in Combatting COVID-19.” The contest is an opportunity for youth to articulate their vision of the UN’s world roll in combatting the pandemic, the challenges that must be overcome in order to realize that vision, and the steps necessary to achieve it.
The UNA-USA Gainesville Chapter envisions this essay contest for middle school students as an important opportunity to encourage youth to engage with issues of importance to their country and the world. Because of the speed, scope, and unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, the UNA-USA Gainesville Chapter considers grappling with the pandemic an important opportunity to pique the interest and involvement of youth and to understand their perspective about how the UN can best help.
